A Workshop Model Example

At City Neighbors, our first grade children are given opportunities to master many skills across all areas of the curriculum, and in a format of work which allows them to imagine, to construct, to explore and to use both their minds and their creativity.  As Progressive Educators, we believe that these activities need to take an important role in classroom life.

Using these “modes of operation” -  acting out, constructing, discovering, and reflecting on those activities  -  which are natural to school age children at this stage of their development,  our first graders learn and grow in many ways.

Every task has a specific set of directions and specific skills which are targeted: in reading, in writing, in comprehension, in math, in learning to show what you know, in social studies and/or science.

Overall these tasks also enhance students’ industrious work habits, their planning and their thoughtful analysis, which are so important to them as they proceed on in school.
